MELODY AND MIME

Rajee Narayan, Director, Nritya Geethajali, was featured in a vocal recital by NCPA at its Little Theatre last Friday. As one who has been frequently appearing at the 'wings' conducting and singing for dance performances, her vocal recitals have become few and far between. But that did not affect her musical impulses and vocal susceptibiities.

In a two-and-a-quarter hour performance she tried to pack as many songs as possible giving glimpses of her performing zest, composing skill and musical erudition. Of the many numbers she rendered, the Sriranjani alapana and her own composition, "Dari Joopi", Kalyani and Purandaradasa's "Nambikettavarillavo" and Kanada Ragam Pallavi (Tisra Ata) in major-delineation impressed better.

Accompanying with confidence was B. Jayashankar whose violin play had some sweet toned phraseology. His alapana efforts and swara sallies were imaginative. P. R. Chandran's was a 'pucca' percussion support to the artiste.
